ABOUT THE ARTISTS PRESENT OR IN INVENTORY


Adams, Virgina (1912- ) American: She studied under Jozfes Orsolya of Hungary. Adams won numerous art awards such as the Connelly Award, Bablas Award, and others. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Laguna Gloria Museum of Austin, Texas; Norfold Museum of Arts and Sciences, Richmond Museum of Fine Arts, and the Texas Fine Arts Museum.


Biddle, George (1919-1959) American: He studied at the Cleveland School of Art (1938-1941) and under Moholy Nagy at the Institute of Design in Chicago from 1945-1946. His awards for his work in watercolors include the Helena Rubenstein Special Distinction Award for Fine Art USA in 1958. During his professional career, his work was exhibited annually at the American Watercolor Society in New York, the Allied Artists of America in New York, the Village Art Center Gallery in New York, the Whitney Museum of Art and others.


Blenner, Carle (1864-1952) Blenner graduated from the Yale Art School and studied at the Academie Julien in Paris and exhibited at the Paris Salon at age 23. His work was selected for exhbition at the Chicago World's Fair, the National Academy of Design and numerous others.


Clara, Juan (1875-1910) Spainish: Clara was born in Olot, Spain (One record indicates that he was born in France). This well known sculptor exhibited at the Paris Solons and won several awards for his work in bronze. He also exhibited at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and is listed in Bronze Sculptures and Founders and the Trocadero Archives.


Cox, Alfred Wilson (Exhibition Period 1860-1888) English: Cox was born in Nottingham. He specialized in painting landscapes, but occassionally painted portraits including his protrait of the fifth Duke of Newcastle which is in the Nottingham Castle Art Gallerry. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and other leading galleries of his day. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artist 1880-1940 p. 125 and The Royal Society of British Artists 1824-1893 p. 110. The latter reference indicates exhbitions in 1876 and 1878


East, Audrey (Miss A. M. East) exhbited 1889-1893. She was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists 1880-1940 , page 160.


Fisher, Harrison (1875-1934) Harrison Fisher was born into a family of artists. He was born in New York City and then moved to Alameda, California. He studied at the San Francisco Art Association and participated with his father and siblings in the family art studio on Battery Street in San Francisco. He worked in variety of roles for William Randolf Hearst and the Hearst publications, including Cosmopolitan and Saturday Evening Post.


Gould, John (1804-1881) English: Gould was born at Lyme Regis in England. He gained his knowledge of birds by observation and experience. Despite his lack of academic training he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scoiety. His artistic work in depicting birds and anaimals with colored lithographic plates is truly exceptional. His work with hummingbirds have an iridescent quality obtained in part by using gold or silver leaf under the water color. Because of the cost of producing such high quality work, the lithographs were produced in very limited numbers.


Haber, Jon (1942-) American- Jon studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Dayton Art Institute in Ohio. He has focused on arts in the south and historical art. In 1977 President Jimmy Carter and Governor George C. Wallace recognized Jon when he designed the "Plains Georgia Portfoilio" Jon received a "Presidential Endorsement" from President Carter. The Plains Georgia Portfolio was exhibited with the Freedom Train.


Keen, Lila Moore (1903-1963 Lila Moore Keen was born in Georgia and studied at Agnes Acott College and with Wayman Adams. She exhibited widely in the Southwest and was highly regarded for her prize winning paintings of Camellias. She also painted magnolias and portraits. She is listed in Davenport's Art Reference and in Mantle Fieldings Dictionary. The print available is a reproduction of Camellia Janonica "Daikaguar".


Lorrain, Claude (byname of 'Claude Gellee')(1600-1682) French - Lorrain is one of the greatest ideal-landscape artists of all time. His work often includes pastoral figures in classical dress and classical ruins. He spent most of his professional life n Rome. He produced numerous paintings amd drawings. He also produced some 44 etchings. He influenced 18th and 19th century art.


Stinson, John Stinson, an African American, was a native of Cleveland, Ohio and began painting at an early age. He was on a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York and was considered one of the most promising African American artists. We are unsure of what happened to John later. We are fortunate to have three of his paintings done while he still lived in Cleveland.


Whiting, E. (Mrs. E. Muir Whiting) is listed on page 544 of the Dictionary of British Artists and exhibited in 1928. She was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.


Williams, Hugh O. (1928- ) Hugh is Alumni Professor Emeritus of Art at Auburn University. He has won numerous awards including The Charles Birchfield Memorial Award from the American Watercolor Society in 1966 and the A. Atward Kent, Jr. Award in 1987. His work is in the collections of the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Columbus Museum of Art, University Gallery Collection of New York, Montgomery Museum of Art, the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museum of the South, and others.
