HUGH O. WILLIAMS 1928 -

Hugh was born in Centre, Alabama. He received his B.A.A. in Applied Art from (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) Auburn University in 1949 and his M.A. in 1956 from Columbia University. Also he studied art at John Herron in Indianapolis, Indiana.


He joined the art faculty of (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) Auburn University in 1957 where his father was also on the faculty. In addition to teaching at Auburn University, he has taught at Queens College, New York; Teachers College, Columbia University; University of Georgia at Columbus, and the University of New Orleans. At Auburn University, he was named the Alumni Professor of Art in 1987, the only funded chair in art, and to date is the only professor to be so recognized.



Hugh's work is in the permanent collection of the following:

Columbia University Art Gallery Collection, New York
Montgomery Museum of Art, Montgomery, Alabama
Brimingham Museum of Art, Brimingham

Mercer University, Macon, Georgia.


In addition, his work is numerous private collections such as Dilin Gallery of Art in Knoxville; the First National Bank Collection of Jackson, Mississippi; Bradley, Arant, Rose & White, Birmingham; International Industrials, Montgomery; Blount & Associates, Montgomery. There have been numerous special exhibitions of Hugh's works, particularly in the Southeast. His most recent exhibitions are the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Georgia in 2006 and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, Auburn University, in 2007.



Hugh has received numerous awards in various media. These awards include:


1961 - Southeastern Annual Special Watercolor Award
1966 - Charles Burchfield Memorial Award -American Watercolor Society, New York
1967 - Purchase Award, Southeastern Annual
1967 - Painting Purchased by National Academy of Design as one of
           the outstanding watercolors in the United States in 1967
1968 - Purchase Award, Southeastern Annual
1971 - Elected membership in the American Watercolor Society
1974 - Wurlitzer Fellow
1976 - MacDowell Colony Fellow
1980 - Schloarship in his name estabished by the Mississippi Arts Association
1986 - Honorarium Award "Visual Arts for the Home Show" Atlanta
1987 - A. Atward Kent, Jr. Award - Society of Four Arts of Palm Beach
